Protalebra

Protalebra is a genus of small insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae (leafhoppers). These pests are characterized by their small body size and often vibrant or patterned coloration, which allows them to effectively camouflage themselves on the underside of host plant leaves.

This pest primarily affects ornamental, fruit-bearing, and vegetable crops in regions with warm climates. The insects pose a particular threat to plants in greenhouses, nurseries, and controlled environments, where favorable conditions allow for continuous mass reproduction throughout the year.

The biology of Protalebra is closely linked to the developmental rhythms of the host plant. Adults and nymphs lead a concealed life, feeding on plant cell sap. The life cycle includes the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. In warm conditions, generations occur continuously, leading to a rapid population explosion if left unmanaged.

Damage symptoms manifest as discolored patches (chlorotic spots) on the leaves, which can eventually merge, leading to premature yellowing and leaf drop. The pest drains the plant, slowing down its photosynthetic activity and overall growth. In addition to physical damage from piercing tissues, they can act as vectors for phytopathogenic viruses.
