Systematic position: Protalebra brasiliensis is a member of the order Hemiptera, family Cicadellidae. As a specialized sap-sucking pest, it has gained attention for its ability to impact agricultural production significantly in tropical and subtropical climates, particularly where solanaceous crops are cultivated extensively.

Host crops: This pest shows a strong preference for the Solanaceae family. Primary host plants include tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants. In addition to these commercial crops, various wild weeds can host the leafhopper, allowing it to survive throughout the year and re-infest cultivated areas during the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Protalebra brasiliensis follows a hemimetabolous pattern, including eggs, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are usually embedded into the leaf tissue or stems by the female. Due to favorable environmental temperatures, the insect can complete multiple generations annually, leading to rapid population surges in managed environments like greenhouses or open fields.

Nature of damage and pest status: Both nymphs and adults extract sap from the phloem and parenchyma of leaves. This feeding activity causes characteristic chlorotic spots and speckling on the leaf surface. As damage progresses, the leaves become necrotic, curl, and may drop prematurely, which severely inhibits the plant's photosynthetic capacity and ultimately results in lower yields and poor fruit quality.
