Protentomon transitans is a species belonging to the order Protura, family Protentomidae. These minute, hexapod organisms are soil-dwelling arthropods that are typically found in moist environments, particularly in forest litter and cultivated soil layers where organic matter is abundant.

These pests thrive in humid conditions and are often distributed within the rhizosphere of various plants. Their presence in agricultural fields is usually linked to the quality and structure of the soil, with a preference for environments that support fungal growth.

The life cycle of this species is characterized by anamorphosis, where the number of body segments increases through successive molts. This developmental strategy is unique to the Protura order and makes them highly dependent on stable soil moisture levels for successful progression through instars.

Regarding agricultural impact, while they primarily feed on mycorrhizal fungi, they can cause physical damage to young root hairs in high-density populations. This feeding activity may stress seedlings, potentially allowing opportunistic pathogens to penetrate the root tissue and hinder nutrient uptake.

Management strategies focus on soil health improvement and appropriate cultivation practices. Because they occupy a specific niche, deep plowing or balanced fertilization can help modulate their population density. Currently, no targeted chemical controls are used against them in commercial farming.
