Unlike common foliar aphids, this species is uniquely adapted to a subterranean lifestyle, feeding exclusively on the root systems of host plants, which makes it a challenging pest to identify and control.

The primary host plants for this species include members of the Asteraceae family, most notably the globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus). By targeting the root architecture, the pest remains hidden beneath the soil surface, often going unnoticed until the host plant exhibits significant stress symptoms.

The biology of Protrama antennata is characterized by symbiotic relationships with ant colonies, which protect the aphids in exchange for the sugary honeydew they produce. The lifecycle involves continuous generations of wingless forms, with winged morphs appearing under environmental stress to colonize new host plants via soil crevices.

Damage to the plant is caused by the aphid's constant sap-sucking, which depletes the host's energy reserves. This results in stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, especially during dry periods. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can lead to the death of the root system and significant economic losses for growers.
