Ranunculus root aphid

Ranunculus root aphid (Protrama ranunculi) is a specialized insect belonging to the Lachnidae family within the Hemiptera order. Unlike common foliage aphids, this species is primarily soil-dwelling, targeting the subterranean parts of host plants.

This pest mainly affects plants within the Ranunculaceae family. By colonizing the root system and the root collar, the aphid effectively hides from standard visual inspections of leaves and stems, allowing the population to grow significantly before any intervention is taken.

The biological cycle of Protrama ranunculi is closely linked to the root environment. These aphids feed by inserting their stylets into the roots to extract phloem sap. This process is often facilitated by soil-dwelling ants, which may attend to the aphids, providing them with protection and assisting in their spread throughout the root zone.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily physiological. Infested plants show stunted growth, chlorosis, and general weakness. The continuous sap depletion significantly reduces the plant's vigor, making it susceptible to environmental stress and opportunistic soil-borne pathogens entering through the aphid-damaged root tissue.

Effective management strategies include the application of systemic soil-drench insecticides that are absorbed by the roots. Cultural practices such as maintaining healthy soil structure, ensuring proper drainage, and strict hygiene when introducing new plant material are essential to prevent infestation.
