Systematic position. Psallus albipennis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae (plant bugs). As a specialized group of phytophagous insects, these bugs are known for their ability to colonize various horticultural and agricultural plants, often becoming significant pests in greenhouses and open fields.

Host plants and damage. The species is polyphagous, targeting a wide range of vegetable crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The feeding activity involves piercing plant tissues and extracting cell sap. This results in stippling patterns, discoloration, and structural deformities in leaves and fruit, leading to significant yield reduction.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Overwintering typically occurs in the egg stage, often deposited within plant tissues. During the growing season, multiple generations may overlap, particularly in warm climates. Nymphs are highly active and begin feeding immediately after hatching, contributing to the rapid increase in pest pressure.

Impact on crops. The pest causes both direct and indirect damage. Direct damage includes the loss of plant vigor due to sap depletion. Indirectly, the mechanical damage to fruit skin makes the crop susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens, which further ruins fruit quality and shelf life. Severe infestations can result in the stunted growth of young plants.

Management strategies. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as weed management are crucial to eliminate alternative hosts. Monitoring population levels using sticky traps helps determine the timing for intervention. When chemical control is necessary, selective insecticides should be applied to manage nymphal stages while minimizing the impact on beneficial insect populations.
