Systematic position: Psallus ambiguus is a member of the Hemiptera order, family Miridae. Known colloquially as the red-legged plant bug, it is a small insect characterized by variable dietary habits, often functioning as a generalist predator within orchard ecosystems.

Host plants: The species is primarily associated with fruit trees, particularly those in the Rosaceae family. It is commonly observed on apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. It frequently inhabits foliage and floral structures where prey availability is high.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters in the egg stage, inserted beneath the bark of young shoots. Larvae hatch in early spring, coinciding with the bud burst of host trees. The species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through five nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. Typically, it completes one generation per year.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: While Psallus ambiguus acts as a beneficial predator of aphids and spider mites, it can cause damage when prey populations are insufficient. In such cases, both nymphs and adults pierce buds, young leaves, and developing fruit. This feeding causes necrotic lesions, resulting in fruit distortion, scarring, and potential fruit drop.
