Mirid bug Psallus varians

Psallus varians is a species of plant bug belonging to the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. These small insects are common inhabitants of temperate forests and orchards, often acting as opportunistic feeders that can reach pest status when population densities are high.

The host range of Psallus varians primarily includes deciduous trees such as oak (Quercus) and fruit-bearing trees like apple and pear. Adults and nymphs feed on the plant sap, targeting developing buds, tender leaves, and young fruitlets, which can disrupt the early stages of the growing season.

The life cycle of the bug is synchronized with the phenology of its host plants. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the bark of twigs. Nymphs emerge in spring coinciding with bud break. Feeding punctures create entry points for secondary infections, such as fungi, which can exacerbate the physical damage caused by the insect’s feeding activity.
