Description

The striped leafhopper (Psammotettix striatus) is a member of the Cicadellidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in regions where cereal production is the primary economic activity.

This pest primarily attacks small grain crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to cultivated fields, it thrives on various wild grass species, which serve as crucial reservoirs for the insect population during off-season periods.

The biological cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs mainly in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in host plant tissue. Depending on environmental conditions, the insect can complete two or more generations per year, leading to rapid population surges during the growing season.

The damage caused by the striped leafhopper is twofold: direct feeding damage, which causes leaf yellowing and stunted plant growth, and the transmission of viral pathogens. The most damaging is the Wheat Striate Mosaic Virus, which can lead to catastrophic yield losses and reduced grain quality.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control. These include weed management to eliminate alternative host plants, optimizing sowing dates to avoid peak pest activity, and the judicious application of registered insecticides when infestation thresholds are exceeded to minimize viral spread.
