The Tamarisk gall midge (Psectrosema tamaricinum) is an insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This specialist pest is exclusively associated with Tamarix species, where it spends the majority of its larval development period.
The primary hosts of the midge are various species of Tamarix, which are common in arid and semi-arid landscapes. By inducing gall formation on young shoots and buds, the midge creates a specialized environment for its larvae, effectively hijacking the plant's nutritional resources for its own development.
The life cycle of Psectrosema tamaricinum is tightly linked to the phenology of the host plant. The adult females lay eggs on growing tips.
