Description
The cotton fleahopper (Pseudatomoscelis seriatus) is a member of the insect order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is widely recognized as a significant pest of cotton, although it exhibits a broad host range that includes various wild weeds and other crops such as alfalfa.
The insect thrives in diverse environments, often utilizing wild host plants for early-season feeding before migrating into cultivated fields. Its adaptability allows it to establish populations quickly, making it a persistent challenge for agricultural producers in specific climatic zones.
The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and adult stages. Eggs are inserted into the soft tissue of terminal buds and stems. Under favorable temperature conditions, the development from egg to adult occurs rapidly, enabling multiple generations to appear within a single growing season.
Fleahoppers feed by piercing and sucking plant juices from developing flower buds (squares). This feeding behavior causes the buds to turn brown and shed prematurely, a condition often referred to as "blasting." The resulting loss of fruit can severely reduce yields if the pest pressure is not managed during the early squaring stage.
