Description

The cotton fleahopper (Pseudatomoscelis seriatus) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is widely recognized as a major pest of cotton, known for causing severe economic losses in various cotton-producing regions by targeting young, developing plant tissues.

While cotton is the primary crop affected, the fleahopper is highly polyphagous and feeds on numerous wild host plants, such as pigweed, horsemint, and croton. These weeds serve as critical early-season nurseries, allowing populations to build up before migrating to cotton fields during the peak growing season.

The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The duration of the cycle depends heavily on temperature; during hot summers, multiple generations can occur, leading to exponential population growth if not monitored carefully by field scouts.

The damage is caused by the piercing-sucking mouthparts of both nymphs and adults. They feed on the sap of squares (small buds) and terminals. This feeding causes the "blasting" or shedding of squares, as well as deformed leaf growth, resulting in stunted plants and delayed fruit set, which significantly impacts total yield.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle this pest. Key strategies include:

  • Scouting fields regularly using sweep nets or visual checks.
  • Controlling alternative weed hosts around the fields.
  • Applying insecticides only when economic thresholds are reached to preserve beneficial insect populations.
  • Implementing cultural practices that promote fast-maturing cotton varieties.
