Description
Systematic position. Pseudochermes (Latin: Pseudochermes) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae, commonly known as soft scale insects. These insects are specialized plant parasites that feed on sap. They are known for their ability to remain hidden on host plants, making early detection a key challenge in agricultural and horticultural management.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the yew tree (Taxus baccata). Pseudochermes colonizes the needles and small twigs of these conifers. By attaching firmly to the plant surface, they extract nutrients, which gradually weakens the host's vigor and structural integrity over time.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Pseudochermes typically involves one generation per year. Development proceeds through egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Overwintering occurs during the early nymph stages, often within crevices in the bark or near the base of the needles, which serves as a protective strategy against harsh weather conditions.
Damage patterns and economic importance. Feeding by these insects results in chlorosis, yellowing, and eventually needle drop. The accumulation of honeydew secreted by the pests often fosters the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and damages the aesthetic value of ornamental conifers. Severe infestations can lead to dieback of twigs and, in extreme cases, the death of the tree.
Control measures. Effective management of Pseudochermes requires a combination of monitoring and targeted applications:
- Apply horticultural oils in early spring to suppress overwintering populations.
- Use systemic insecticides during the peak crawler activity period.
- Implement proper pruning practices to remove heavily infested branches.
- Maintain tree health through adequate irrigation and nutrient management to increase natural resistance.
