The Meadow grasshopper (Pseudochorthippus curtipennis) is a member of the family Acrididae, belonging to the order Orthoptera. This species is widely distributed across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, where it is commonly found in damp grasslands, meadows, and adjacent agricultural crop fields.
This insect primarily targets graminaceous plants, including major cereal crops like wheat, barley, and oats, as well as various forage grasses. While they are often considered minor pests, their populations can spike in favorable weather conditions, leading to localized infestations that threaten field productivity.
The biological cycle of this grasshopper involves a single generation per year. Winter is spent in the egg stage, buried in the soil. During the spring, nymphs emerge and progress through several instars. The adult stage, characterized by its flight or hopping ability depending on wing development, becomes active throughout the mid-to-late summer months.
Damage to plants is caused by the voracious feeding of both nymphs and adults. They chew the edges of leaves and can strip stems entirely if the infestation is severe. This herbivory reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize, resulting in stunted growth, lower grain yield, and reduced quality of harvested forage for livestock feed.
Effective pest management involves integrated strategies to keep population densities below the economic threshold. Cultural practices such as regular mowing of field borders and deep plowing after harvest are highly recommended to disrupt egg-laying sites. In cases of significant outbreaks, the application of chemical insecticides should be strictly timed to the nymph stages for maximum impact.
