Systematic position: The meadow grasshopper (Pseudochorthippus montanus) belongs to the order Orthoptera, family Acrididae. It is a common insect found in grassland habitats and agricultural landscapes, characterized by its ability to adapt to varying moisture conditions and exploit available herbaceous vegetation.

Damaged crops and impact: This species is a generalist herbivore that feeds on various grasses, cereals, and leguminous crops. It poses a significant threat to pastures, meadows, and grain fields by reducing the photosynthetic surface area of the plants, which subsequently stunts plant growth and reduces overall biomass production for both fodder and grain harvest.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in the soil in pods (oothecae) and serve as the overwintering stage. Hatching occurs in spring, followed by several nymphal instars. The insects grow steadily through the summer, eventually reaching the adult stage, when they become highly mobile and capable of flight, allowing for rapid colonization of new fields.

Nature of damage: Grasshoppers consume the edges of leaf blades, leading to ragged, irregular leaf margins. Under high population density, they can cause extensive defoliation, stripping plants down to the stems. This feeding pattern severely limits the plant's metabolic capacity, often resulting in significant economic losses in regions where environmental conditions favor population surges.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Recommended practices include:

• deep soil cultivation or plowing to expose and destroy overwintering egg pods;
• maintaining clean field borders by removing weeds;
• timely chemical application using registered insecticides when nymphal populations exceed economic damage thresholds during early development stages.
