Pseudococcus albizziae is an insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. Commonly known as a mealybug, it is recognized by the white, waxy secretion that covers the bodies of females, serving as protection against environmental stressors and some insecticides.

The host range of this pest primarily includes plants within the Fabaceae family, such as Albizia and Acacia species. It is also known to infest various ornamental plants and citrus, often becoming a significant problem in nurseries and greenhouses where optimal conditions for development are maintained year-round.

The life cycle of the Albizzia mealybug includes the egg, nymphal stages, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside cottony, waxy ovisacs usually found in bark crevices or at leaf junctions. Under favorable temperature conditions, the pest can complete several generations per year, leading to rapid population growth.

The primary damage is caused by the nymphs and females feeding on the plant's phloem sap. This nutrient extraction results in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, curling, and potential plant death if infestations are severe. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and hinders the plant's photosynthetic ability.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Growers should prioritize regular inspections of stems and leaf axils. For control, the application of systemic insecticides is often necessary.
