Description
The Oriental mealybug (Pseudococcus cryptus) is a significant pest belonging to the family Pseudococcidae under the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a serious invasive species that causes substantial economic losses in both fruit orchards and nursery stocks globally.
This pest exhibits a wide host range, primarily attacking citrus trees, persimmon, pomegranate, fig, and various ornamental plants. It thrives in warm environments, making it a persistent challenge for greenhouse production and subtropical agriculture.
The life cycle involves egg, nymphal (crawler), and adult stages. Females produce ovisacs consisting of white, waxy, cottony secretions that protect their eggs. The first instar nymphs, or "crawlers," are highly mobile, allowing them to disperse to new parts of the host plant or spread to adjacent plants via wind or agricultural tools.
Damage is caused by the sucking of phloem sap from leaves, stems, and fruits. Direct damage results in stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and fruit drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks photosynthesis and makes the fruit unsuitable for market sale.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:
