Hyacinth mealybug

Pseudococcus hyacinthi

Description

Systematic position: The hyacinth mealybug (Pseudococcus hyacinthi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. These sap-sucking insects are recognized by their oval, flattened bodies covered in a white, powdery wax secretion, which protects them from environmental stressors and pesticides.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets bulbs of the genus Hyacinthus. However, it can also infest other ornamental bulbs grown in greenhouses, where protected conditions allow the pest population to expand rapidly throughout the year.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in clusters protected by waxy ovisacs. The mobile nymphs, often called "crawlers," move across the plant surfaces to find suitable feeding sites. Once they settle, they remain relatively stationary, inserting their stylets into the plant tissue to extract sap.

Damage and economic impact: Feeding by the mealybug weakens the plant, leading to stunted growth, yellowing, and necrotic spots on foliage. The excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and impairs photosynthesis. Furthermore, feeding wounds serve as entry points for various fungal and bacterial pathogens that cause bulb rot.

Protection measures: Effective management relies on early detection and a multi-faceted approach to pest control:

  • Rigorous inspection of bulbs during storage and prior to planting to ensure no pests are introduced.
  • Systemic insecticide applications applied to the soil or as a dip for bulbs before planting.
  • Maintaining optimal greenhouse hygiene and controlling humidity levels to prevent outbreaks.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of infested plant material to reduce local population density.
