Description
Systematic position. The Philippine mealybug (Pseudococcus philippinicus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in tropical environments, where it poses a persistent threat to economically vital crops.
Host plants. The primary host for Pseudococcus philippinicus is sugarcane. While it is highly adapted to this host, the species can also infest various wild grasses. These weeds are crucial as they allow the pest to survive between cropping seasons and act as reservoirs for re-infestation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The female mealybugs are sedentary and are covered in a white, powdery wax secretion, which provides protection against desiccation and natural predators. The reproductive rate is highly influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity, with warmer climates leading to shorter generation times and faster population spikes.
Type of damage and economic importance. The damage is primarily caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on phloem sap. This feeding process results in significant physiological stress to the host plants.
