Tea mealybug

Systematic position: The tea mealybug (Pseudococcus theaecola) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in regions where tea cultivation is intensive, causing localized outbreaks that can compromise both plant health and product yield quality.

Host plants: The primary host of Pseudococcus theaecola is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). However, it is a polyphagous insect that can occasionally infest other woody plants and shrubs present in the agroecosystem, making it a persistent challenge for integrated farm management strategies.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of this mealybug includes the egg stage, several larval instars (nymphs), and the adult stage. Adult females are protected by a white, waxy secretion, which covers their bodies and egg masses. The crawler stage (first-instar nymphs) is the primary dispersal phase, allowing the pest to move between plants or be spread by wind, workers, and agricultural equipment.

Damage and pest status: These pests feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissues and sucking out sap. This feeding process leads to reduced vigor, leaf distortion, and stunted shoot growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the foliage, blocks sunlight, and significantly inhibits photosynthesis, leading to reduced productivity and quality degradation of the harvested tea leaves.

Control measures: Management of the tea mealybug requires a well-structured approach. Cultural practices, such as maintaining appropriate plant spacing and pruning to reduce humidity, are essential for creating an unfavorable environment for the pest. Chemical control involves the use of systemic insecticides during critical windows of the insect's lifecycle. Additionally, biological control using natural predators, such as coccinellid beetles, is highly recommended to maintain population levels below the economic injury threshold.
