Vincente's cricket

Systematic position. Vincente's cricket (Pseudomogoplistes vicentae) is a species within the order Orthoptera and the family Mogoplistidae (scaly crickets). While less commonly cited as a major agricultural pest compared to field crickets, it can cause localized damage to crops under specific environmental conditions.

Biology and life cycle. This insect typically exhibits a secretive, nocturnal behavior. Its life cycle progresses through several nymphal stages before reaching the adult phase. These crickets favor damp environments, often hiding in soil cracks, leaf litter, or debris during the day to avoid desiccation and predators, becoming active feeders once dusk falls.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage caused by Pseudomogoplistes vicentae is characterized by ragged holes in leaves and the consumption of tender shoots and seedlings. Their gnawing habits can severely impact the vigor of young plants, leading to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and, in severe infestations, the total loss of the crop or nursery plantings.

Susceptible crops. The pest is known to target various vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and young sprouts in greenhouse environments. Greenhouses are particularly susceptible due to the stable humidity and temperature, which favor the proliferation and continuous breeding cycles of this species throughout the growing season.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this cricket.

• Removal of garden debris and weeds to eliminate daytime shelters.
• Deep soil cultivation to disrupt breeding sites.
• Application of targeted contact insecticides when economic thresholds are exceeded.
• Use of physical barriers or traps to monitor and reduce populations in enclosed spaces.
