The stone moroko (Pseudorasbora parva) is a small freshwater fish species belonging to the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae. Originating from East Asia, it has successfully established populations worldwide, becoming one of the most problematic invasive species in aquaculture and native river ecosystems.
This species acts as a severe pest in aquaculture. It does not damage agricultural crops but poses a significant threat to fish farms by competing for food and consuming the eggs and larvae of economically important species like carp. High population densities can lead to the total collapse of fish production in commercial ponds.
The biology of the stone moroko is characterized by high environmental adaptability and reproductive success. Individuals mature rapidly, often within the first year of life. Breeding occurs in multiple batches during the spawning season. Males exhibit parental care, guarding the egg clutches attached to hard substrates, which ensures high survival rates of the offspring.
The harmfulness of this species is multifaceted. Beyond direct competition for space and nutrients, it acts as a vector for the parasite Sphaerothecum destruens. This parasite causes significant health issues in various fish, leading to stunted growth, reproductive failure, and mass mortality in high-density pond systems.
