Description
The carrot rust fly (Psila rosae) is a significant pest of the Apiaceae family, belonging to the family Psilidae. This small fly, measuring 4–5 mm, is characterized by a shiny black body with a yellowish-brown head and legs, posing a serious threat to root vegetable production globally.
The primary hosts for this pest include carrots, parsnips, celery, parsley, and fennel. The larvae are the stage responsible for damage; they bore into the roots of developing plants, creating extensive galleries or tunnels. This internal feeding destroys the vegetable's structural integrity and quality.
The biological cycle typically consists of two generations per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa in the soil or as a larva within the roots. In spring, adults emerge and lay eggs in the soil around the base of host plants. The larvae hatch and migrate to the roots to begin feeding immediately upon emergence.
Signs of infestation include stunted growth, reddening or yellowing of the foliage, and eventually wilting of the plant tops. Infested roots show visible boreholes and may develop soft rots due to secondary bacterial or fungal infections, making them entirely unmarketable and inedible.
