Psyttalia concolor

Psyttalia concolor is a Hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Braconidae. It is a well-known parasitoid used in integrated pest management programs to control fruit fly populations, most notably the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata), which causes severe damage to fruit and vegetable crops globally.

The insect does not damage crops but is highly beneficial to agriculture. It functions as an endoparasitoid, meaning it completes its larval development within the body of its host. By targeting the larval stage of the fruit fly, Psyttalia concolor prevents the maturation of pests that would otherwise ruin fruit harvests.

The life cycle begins when the female wasp locates a host larva buried inside a fruit. She uses her ovipositor to inject an egg directly into the host. Upon hatching, the wasp larva consumes the internal tissues of the fruit fly larva, eventually pupating inside the host's hardened shell (puparium) before emerging as an adult.

In agricultural practice, this parasitoid is valued for its ability to reduce reliance on broad-spectrum chemical insecticides. Its use is a cornerstone of organic and integrated crop management, helping to maintain ecological balance in orchards and commercial vegetable farms, particularly in subtropical and tropical regions.
