Description
The Raspberry fruit fly (Pterandrus rubivorus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tephritidae family (fruit flies). It is widely recognized by agronomists for its ability to impact the quality and yield of Rubus species, specifically targeting the developing fruit of raspberries and blackberries.
The species primarily affects raspberry and blackberry plantations. Adult flies lay eggs in the developing ovaries of the plant. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the fruit to consume the internal tissues, which often leads to rapid decay and loss of market value for the affected berry crops.
Regarding its biological cycle, the fly undergoes complete metamorphosis. It typically overwinters as a pupa in the soil near the host plants. In the spring, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs during the flowering and fruit-setting stages. This synchronized timing makes the crop particularly vulnerable during the early harvest season.
Visual identification of infestation involves observing deformed, mushy, or prematurely darkened fruits. If a fruit is opened, small white larvae may be visible inside.
