Description
The peach bark aphid (Pterochloroides persicae) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is widely recognized as a severe threat to stone fruit orchards due to its unique feeding habits and high reproductive capacity.
This species primarily infests trees within the genus Prunus, including peach, nectarine, almond, and apricot. Unlike foliage-feeding aphids, Pterochloroides persicae colonizes the bark of trunks and main branches, often forming large, dense clusters that can be overlooked until significant damage occurs.
The biological cycle involves overwintering as eggs in the crevices of the tree bark. With the onset of spring temperatures, the eggs hatch into nymphs. These insects multiply rapidly, often reaching extremely high population densities that can cover entire trunks, causing substantial stress to the host tree.
Damage is characterized by severe sap depletion, which leads to bark cracking and excessive gumming (gummosis). The presence of honeydew secreted by the aphids triggers the growth of sooty mold, which negatively impacts the tree's health and reduces fruit yield quality over consecutive seasons.
Integrated pest management strategies include:
- Winter pruning to remove heavily infested branches.
- Application of dormant oil sprays to target overwintering eggs.
- Use of systemic insecticides during the active growth phase of the pest.
