The Black-bellied sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis) belongs to the Pteroclidae family. While primarily an arid-zone bird, its tendency to forage in agricultural landscapes classifies it as a potential pest in cereal-producing regions. These birds are highly terrestrial, allowing them to traverse large areas of arable land in search of food and water.

This species primarily impacts cereal crops, including wheat and barley, as well as sunflowers. Damage is most significant during the early emergence phase when the birds consume newly sown seeds, and during the grain-filling stage when they feed on the developing kernels. Large flocks can cause substantial local crop losses, significantly reducing the yield potential in affected fields.

The biology of the Black-bellied sandgrouse is uniquely adapted to desert and steppe environments. They nest on the ground, and their survival strategy involves long-distance daily commutes between arid nesting grounds and food sources.
