Willow aphid

The Willow aphid (genus Pterocomma) belongs to the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. These insects are specialized pests that primarily infest woody plants, with a strong preference for members of the Salicaceae family, specifically willows and poplars. Due to their specific feeding habits, they are widely recognized as a significant pest in nurseries and urban forestry.

These aphids cause damage to various species of Salix and Populus. They usually cluster in dense colonies on the bark of twigs, branches, and stems. Because they feed on the sap of these woody plants, they can severely stunt the growth of young trees and affect the development of ornamental and industrial willow plantations.

The biological cycle of Pterocomma is complex, featuring both wingless and winged morphs. They overwinter as eggs, typically deposited in the crevices of the host plant's bark. When spring temperatures rise, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, initiating the first generation of the season. Multiple generations are produced throughout the summer, allowing for rapid population explosions under favorable climate conditions.

Symptoms of infestation include shoot distortion, bark damage, and the presence of abundant honeydew. This sugary substance often leads to the growth of sooty mold, which covers the bark and leaves, interfering with photosynthesis. Heavy infestations can lead to shoot dieback, especially in weakened or young trees that lack the resilience to withstand significant sap loss.

Pest management strategies involve both chemical and biological methods. Systemic insecticides are effective when applied early in the season to prevent colony establishment. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, such as promoting natural predators like ladybirds (Coccinellidae) and lacewings, are highly recommended to keep populations below the economic injury level without relying solely on chemical treatments.
