Aspen aphid

The aspen aphid (Pterocomma tremulae) is a species belonging to the family Aphididae within the order Hemiptera. This aphid is a host-specific insect that primarily colonizes trees of the genus Populus, with a particular affinity for aspen, utilizing the sap of the plant as its exclusive food source.

The aphid tends to congregate on young shoots, petioles, and the tender bark of smaller branches. By feeding on the phloem sap, the aphids induce physical stress in the host tree. Chronic infestation, especially in younger saplings, can lead to stunted growth, wilting of shoots, and a reduction in the overall vigor of the tree.

The life cycle involves an overwintering egg stage, typically found on the bark of host trees. In the spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately, leading to the formation of dense colonies. Throughout the growing season, successive generations are produced via parthenogenesis, with winged individuals emerging in summer to colonize new plant parts.

Damage symptoms include curling and yellowing of leaves, twisting of new growth, and the development of sooty mold. The latter grows on the honeydew excreted by the aphids, which covers the leaf surfaces and inhibits photosynthesis, further weakening the tree's health and aesthetic appeal in landscaping or forestry settings.

Management strategies focus on a combination of chemical and biological control methods. Systemic insecticides are highly effective if applied early in the season when the first colonies are detected. Maintaining tree health through proper watering and fertilization also helps the host plants withstand the pressure from aphid populations.
