Spittlebug

Systematic position. The genus Ptyelus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. These insects are commonly known as spittlebugs or froghoppers because of their characteristic habit of secreting a protective frothy mass that covers the nymphs throughout their early developmental stages.

Host crops and impact. Spittlebugs are polyphagous pests that affect a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, vegetable plants, berry bushes, and ornamentals. Both nymphs and adults feed on the plant sap by piercing the xylem or phloem tissues, which causes significant physiological stress, stunting, and reduced vigor of the host plant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, usually protected within plant tissues or bark crevices. Upon hatching, nymphs begin to feed and produce the distinctive spittle. Adults are highly mobile, possessing powerful hind legs that allow them to jump great distances, facilitating the rapid colonization of new fields.

Nature of damage. Beyond the mechanical damage caused by feeding, spittlebugs are known to transmit various plant pathogens, including viruses and phytoplasmas. The sticky honeydew secreted by these insects can cover the leaf surface, promoting the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the vital process of photosynthesis in affected crops.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Ptyelus species. Cultural practices such as weed management are crucial, as many weeds act as alternative hosts for the nymphs. Chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides is effective if applied early in the season. Proper timing is key to penetrating the foam cover and reaching the nymphs effectively.
