Ninespine stickleback

The Ninespine stickleback (Latin: Pungitius pungitius) is a small fish belonging to the order Gasterosteiformes and the family Gasterosteidae. While native to many northern regions, in the context of commercial aquaculture and intensive pond farming, this species is classified as a pest due to its destructive behavior toward the stock of valuable fish species and its competition for food resources.

The stickleback primarily damages young fish populations by consuming fry and eggs of commercially important species such as carp and whitefish. In integrated rice-fish farming systems, it competes with target species for zooplankton and benthic organisms, which significantly reduces the growth rate of the main harvest. Its presence creates a parasitic-like pressure on the pond ecosystem, hindering agricultural efficiency.

Regarding its biology, the species is highly adaptable to various environmental conditions, including low oxygen levels and fluctuating temperatures. During the spawning season, males build intricate nests from aquatic vegetation. The rapid life cycle and aggressive territorial behavior ensure that once established, the population grows quickly, making it a persistent problem for hatchery and pond managers.

The level of harm caused by Pungitius pungitius is reflected in reduced biomass production and increased mortality rates of juvenile fish. The stickleback acts as a bottleneck for ecosystem productivity, consuming nutrients and energy that should otherwise be channeled into the growth of the aquaculture product. Left unchecked, a localized infestation can cause substantial economic losses for fish farming enterprises.
