Puto

Puto is a genus of insects belonging to the Pseudococcidae family, commonly known as mealybugs. These pests are characterized by their white, waxy, powdery secretion that covers their bodies, providing a robust defense against environmental stressors and many traditional contact pesticides. They are recognized as significant sap-sucking pests in both forestry and horticulture.

The host range of Puto includes a variety of coniferous species, ornamental trees, and occasionally fruit-bearing plants. They are particularly detrimental to nursery stocks and young saplings, where they congregate on bark crevices, buds, and fresh growth. Their feeding habits extract essential nutrients, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant.

The biological cycle of this pest progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females produce waxy ovisacs to protect their eggs, which significantly enhances the survival rate of offspring. Depending on the ambient temperature and climate, they can complete multiple life cycles in a single growing season, leading to rapid population outbreaks if left unchecked.

Damage is primarily caused by the extraction of sap, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing), and needle or leaf drop. Furthermore, these insects produce honeydew, a sticky substance that serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This fungal growth blocks photosynthesis and severely degrades the aesthetic and market value of ornamental plants.

Effective management requires a strategic approach:

• Implementation of systemic insecticide treatments during the crawler (nymph) emergence phase.
• Dormant-season applications of horticultural oils to suffocate overwintering populations.
• Regular inspection of bark and stem junctions to identify early-stage infestations.
• Pruning and destroying severely infested plant tissues to reduce the overall pest pressure in the field.
