Description
The Barber's mealybug, scientifically known as Puto barberi, is a scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. This pest is recognized for its ability to infest a variety of woody and ornamental plants, causing significant physiological stress to the host.
The host range of Puto barberi is extensive, including numerous conifers, broad-leaved shrubs, and fruit-bearing trees. These insects typically aggregate in protected areas of the plant, such as leaf axils, bark crevices, and terminal buds, where they feed undisturbed by extracting plant sap.
The biology of this pest involves a complex life cycle where the female produces protective waxy ovisacs. These white, cottony secretions are a key diagnostic feature in the field. Once the eggs hatch, the active crawlers disperse to new feeding sites before settling and secreting their waxy covering.
The damage caused by Puto barberi is characterized by stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which severely limits the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and reduces its aesthetic and commercial value.
