The cypress mealybug (Puto cupressi) is a significant pest belonging to the Pseudococcidae family that specifically targets coniferous trees. This pest thrives in sheltered areas of the tree, such as the base of the needles, scale junctions, and bark crevices, which allows it to remain unnoticed until the infestation reaches critical levels.

The damage caused by Puto cupressi involves the extraction of essential plant fluids by nymphs and adult females. As a result, the infested branches begin to yellow and eventually die back. If left unmanaged, the tree suffers from stunted growth, needle drop, and overall physiological decline, which can lead to the death of young or weakened ornamental conifers.

In terms of its life cycle and biology, the cypress mealybug produces mobile nymphs known as crawlers. This dark, fungal layer covers the needles and stems, further stressing the tree by inhibiting photosynthesis and detracting from its aesthetic value.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical control. Because the insect's wax coating provides a natural barrier against many contact pesticides, the use of systemic insecticides is highly recommended. These products travel through the plant's vascular system, ensuring that the pest ingests the toxin while feeding, which remains the most reliable strategy for eradication.
