Description

Systematic position. The Sandin mealybug, scientifically known as Puto sandini, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Putoidae. This group of scale insects is distinct due to its unique morphological features, such as specific dermal glands that secrete a protective wax layer, which is essential for their survival in challenging environments.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets coniferous trees. It is frequently observed infesting various species of the genera Pinus, Picea, and Abies. While it can be found in natural forests, it poses a significant risk to nursery stocks and urban landscape plantings where host density allows for rapid colonization.

Biology and life cycle. Puto sandini follows a lifecycle adapted to temperate climates. They typically overwinter as nymphs tucked away in bark crevices or at the base of needles. In the spring, these nymphs resume activity, grow rapidly, and eventually reach maturity. Females produce ovisacs (egg sacs) covered in white waxy filaments, which protect the eggs from predators and environmental stressors.

Damage and economic impact. As a phloem-feeding pest, the Sandin mealybug extracts essential nutrients from the tree, leading to physiological stress. Damage symptoms include needle discoloration (chlorosis), twisting, and premature abscission. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of ornamental conifers.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this mealybug. Key strategies include:

  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak activity period.
  • Dormant oil sprays in early spring to target overwintering nymphs.
  • Encouraging natural biological control agents such as ladybird beetles and lacewings.
  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
  • Regular monitoring and inspection of new plant material introduced into the nursery or landscape.
