The plum leaf gall midge (Putoniella marsupialis) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. This specialized pest primarily targets plum and cherry-plum trees, creating distinct morphological changes on the leaves that are easily recognizable by professional horticulturists.
The life cycle of the midge is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Adult midges emerge in the spring, coinciding with the early stages of leaf development. Following mating, females lay eggs on the tender young leaves, which subsequently serve as the primary site for larval feeding and growth.
As the larvae feed, they secrete substances that induce the plant to form characteristic galls—pocket-like deformations on the upper surface of the leaves.
