Description

Systematic position: Pyraphis belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest species that has adapted to feeding on the tissues of plants within the genus Pyrus, primarily targeting pear trees.

Host plants: The primary host is the pear tree. The pest tends to settle on young growing shoots, the undersides of leaves, and developing flower buds, making it particularly damaging to young orchards and nursery stock where rapid growth is essential.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters in the egg stage, typically found in crevices of the bark or near dormant buds. In early spring, nymphs hatch and begin feeding, quickly establishing colonies. Throughout the growing season, multiple generations are produced, including winged forms that allow the aphid to migrate and infest new parts of the tree or adjacent trees.

Damage and harmfulness: Feeding by Pyraphis leads to leaf curling, chlorosis, and stunted growth of shoots. A significant byproduct is the production of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight, severely hindering photosynthesis and reducing the overall vigor and productivity of the infested pear trees.

Control measures: Effective management requires regular monitoring of the orchard. Early intervention with systemic insecticides during the initial stages of colony development is crucial. In addition, biological control using natural predators like lady beetles and lacewings is recommended. Maintaining tree health through proper pruning and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization helps reduce the tree's attractiveness to aphid infestations.
