Sugarcane leafhopper

Pyrilla perpusilla

Description

The sugarcane leafhopper (Pyrilla perpusilla) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Lophopidae. It is widely recognized for its destructive impact on sugarcane crops in various parts of Asia. The insect is easily distinguished by its prominent, snout-like head projection and its tendency to aggregate on the underside of leaves.

While sugarcane is the primary host for this pest, P. perpusilla is known to be polyphagous during outbreaks, attacking various grasses and cereal crops such as wheat, maize, sorghum, and oats. The availability of these alternative hosts allows the pest to survive and multiply even when the primary crop is not in its most vulnerable stage of development.

The biology of the sugarcane leafhopper involves several overlapping generations per year. The female insect typically deposits clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves, covering them with waxy filaments for protection. After hatching, the nymphs undergo several molts before reaching the adult stage, with the entire development cycle highly influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity.

The damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues and sucking out sap. This feeding behavior induces leaf yellowing, chlorosis, and premature drying. A secondary, but equally destructive, effect is the secretion of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold. This mold coats the leaves, severely hindering photosynthesis and resulting in reduced plant vigor and crop yield losses.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for controlling this pest include:

  • Biological control using specialized egg parasitoids such as Epipyrops melanoleuca.
  • Cultural practices like destroying crop residues and stubble where the pest hides during the off-season.
  • Selective insecticide applications targeted at peak infestation periods to minimize chemical load on the ecosystem.
  • Regular field surveillance to monitor population density and initiate control measures before significant damage occurs.
