Description
Systematic position: The genus Rabdophaga belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. These are specialized gall-forming midges that predominantly affect trees of the Salix genus, triggering the plant to develop abnormal growths known as galls on various organs.
Host plants: The primary hosts are various species of willow. These pests can be particularly damaging to commercial willow plantations used for basketry or biomass production, as well as to ornamental willow trees planted in landscaping projects.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the willow's seasonal growth. Adult midges lay eggs directly into the plant tissue. Once hatched, the larvae feed inside the tissue and release chemicals that induce the host plant to grow a gall, providing the larvae with both food and shelter until they pupate.
Damage and economic impact: Damage is characterized by the formation of shoot galls, rosette galls, or general swelling of the twigs. Severe infestations can cause stunted growth, deformation of the canopy, and in young or sensitive trees, significant physiological stress that reduces the overall health and vitality of the plant.
Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Rabdophaga:
- Pruning and destroying infested plant material before adult emergence.
- Selecting resistant willow species or hybrids to minimize susceptibility.
- Applying systemic insecticides during the peak egg-laying period if necessary.
- Encouraging natural biological controls, such as parasitic wasps that prey on the larvae within the galls.
