These midges are globally distributed and are frequently encountered by nursery growers and gardeners who maintain various types of willow trees and shrubs.

Host plants and damage symptoms primarily include various Salix species. The midge is known for causing terminal galls on the tips of shoots. These galls appear as dense, deformed rosettes of leaves or stunted bud formations. The physiological impact is significant, as the larvae feed inside, altering the plant's hormonal balance and restricting the normal elongation of the shoot.

Biology and life cycle are closely synchronized with the willow phenology. The insect typically undergoes several generations throughout the growing season. Adults emerge in spring to lay eggs on developing buds or young shoots. Larvae hatch and begin feeding immediately, inducing the host plant to form a gall which provides both food and protection for the developing larvae until pupation.

Economic and ornamental impact is primarily focused on the loss of plant aesthetics and vigor. In nurseries, heavy infestation can ruin the appearance of ornamental willows, rendering them unsaleable. Furthermore, the constant stress caused by repeated gall formation can lead to stunted growth and increased susceptibility to other biotic and abiotic stresses, reducing the tree's lifespan.

Control measures require early intervention. The most effective cultural practice is the manual removal and destruction of galls as soon as they are detected, and before the adult midges emerge to start a new cycle. If infestation levels are high, targeted applications of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult flight period can be effective. Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and watering helps mitigate the impact of the pest.
