Description
Systematic position: The willow bud gall midge (Rabdophaga pierrei) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. These minute insects are known for inducing abnormal plant growths, commonly referred to as galls, which serve as protection and food sources for their larvae.
Host plants: This pest primarily targets various species of willow (Salix spp.). It is frequently found in nurseries, urban landscapes, and riparian environments where willow trees are cultivated for ornamental purposes or erosion control, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. The larvae overwinter inside the infested buds. With the arrival of spring, they pupate, and adult midges emerge to mate and lay eggs on newly developing buds. The developmental rate is highly dependent on spring temperatures and host tree phenology.
Damage and pest status: Feeding activity of the larvae inside the buds leads to the formation of galls that prevent normal shoot development. Infested buds fail to open properly, resulting in stunted growth, distorted twigs, and a general reduction in the tree's health and vigor during the active growing season.
Control measures: Management practices focus on physical removal: pruning and destroying infested buds before adult emergence is the most effective cultural control. Chemical control is limited to early spring applications of systemic or contact insecticides targeting the adult stage or neonate larvae before they burrow into the bud tissue.
