Description

The willow rosette gall midge (Rabdophaga rosaria) is a small insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This specialized pest is widely known for its ability to induce the formation of distinct, rose-like leaf galls on the terminal buds of various willow species (Salix), effectively halting normal growth.

The insect primarily infests several species of willow, including Salix fragilis, Salix caprea, and Salix purpurea. It is a common inhabitant in nurseries, urban parks, and natural stands. While generally not lethal to mature trees, the aesthetic damage and the inhibition of apical growth make it a significant concern for ornamental willow production.

The biological cycle of this midge is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. In spring, females lay eggs into the developing terminal buds. As larvae hatch and begin feeding, they secrete biochemical substances that cause the host plant to produce hypertrophied leaf tissues, forming a dense, leafy rosette that provides the larvae with protection and nutrients throughout their development.

Damage is characterized by the cessation of shoot elongation, resulting in stunted, bushy growth. The presence of these rosette-shaped galls is the most obvious diagnostic symptom. Chronic infestation reduces the overall vigor of the host plant and significantly impacts the commercial value of willow stems grown for decorative use or basketry.

Management strategies focus on cultural and mechanical control. The most effective practice is the pruning and destruction of the galls before the adult midges emerge in late spring. This prevents the next generation from spreading. In high-value ornamental settings, targeted applications of systemic insecticides during the egg-laying period can also be employed to reduce localized populations.
