Spanish locust

The Spanish locust (Ramburiella hispanica) is a species of grasshopper belonging to the Acrididae family. Primarily found in the Mediterranean region, including parts of Southern Europe and Northern Africa, it is categorized as a significant agricultural pest. This insect is known for its ability to cause sporadic but severe damage to various field crops under favorable environmental conditions.

This pest is a polyphagous insect that shows a preference for cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. In addition to cultivated grains, it thrives on various wild grasses found in pastures and field margins. During periods of drought, when their natural food sources become scarce, Spanish locusts often migrate to nearby agricultural fields, posing a direct threat to crop yield and quality.

The life cycle of Ramburiella hispanica follows a standard pattern for Acrididae, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in pods within the soil, typically in warm, dry areas, where they overwinter. In the spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages, feeding intensively on green plant tissue before reaching their adult reproductive phase.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by heavy defoliation. Nymphs and adults chew on the leaves, which significantly reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity. In extreme cases of infestation, they can strip the stems and cause severe damage to the developing grain heads, leading to stunted growth, reduced grain weight, and significant yield losses in cereal crops.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling the Spanish locust:

• Continuous monitoring of nymph populations during the early spring.
• Application of selective insecticides when population densities exceed economic thresholds.
