Ranatra

Ranatra is a genus of insects in the family Nepidae, commonly known as water scorpions or water stick insects. While they are not pests of traditional row crops, they are significant predators in aquaculture, specifically affecting fish hatchery ponds where they prey on young fish fry.

Taxonomically, these insects belong to the order Hemiptera. They possess a long, slender body that provides excellent camouflage among aquatic vegetation. A distinctive anatomical feature is the long, terminal respiratory tube which they use to breathe air at the surface while remaining submerged in the water, waiting for potential prey.

The damage caused by Ranatra is primarily related to their predatory behavior. Adult insects and nymphs are opportunistic feeders, capturing small aquatic invertebrates and fish fry with their specialized raptorial forelegs. In confined aquaculture environments, a large population of these insects can cause significant mortality among stock, hindering productivity.

Their life cycle includes incomplete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs into the tissues of submerged aquatic plants. The emerging nymphs are miniature, wingless versions of the adults. Throughout their developmental stages, they maintain a predatory lifestyle, requiring constant access to aquatic prey to sustain their growth and transition to the adult stage.

Management strategies for controlling Ranatra in fish ponds focus on habitat modification and pond maintenance. Regular draining of ponds helps disrupt the life cycle of the insect. Furthermore, the removal of aquatic macrophytes reduces the number of sites available for oviposition and limits hiding spots for hunting. Because these insects inhabit water, chemical control is rarely used due to the high risk of negative impact on fish health and water quality.
