Rastrococcus mealybug

Taxonomic classification: Rastrococcus invadens belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is recognized as a significant invasive mealybug species, known for its destructive impact on a wide variety of plant hosts across tropical and subtropical regions.

Host range: This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking more than 90 different plant species. Economically important hosts include mango, citrus, banana, coffee, and guava. The pest typically colonizes the undersides of leaves, young stems, and fruits, establishing dense colonies that rapidly weaken the plant.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymphal (instar), and adult stages. Females are sedentary and covered by a protective waxy secretion, which significantly enhances their survival against environmental stress and pesticides. The species typically reproduces parthenogenetically, allowing for a rapid increase in population density under favorable temperature and humidity conditions.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness: Feeding by nymphs and adults causes stunting, leaf curling, and necrosis. The most characteristic sign of an infestation is the excessive production of honeydew, which leads to the growth of sooty mold. This mold covers the leaf surface, effectively reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and rendering fruits unmarketable.

Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include:

• Strict quarantine measures to prevent regional spread.
• Biological control through the introduction of parasitoid wasps like Gyranusoidea tebygi.
• Application of systemic insecticides during early infestation stages.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts to reduce the source of inoculum.
