Tropical mealybug

Systematic position: The tropical mealybug (Rastrococcus tropicasiaticus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a highly invasive and destructive species known for its ability to infest a wide variety of tropical and subtropical plants, causing significant economic losses in fruit and ornamental production.

Host plants: This pest is a polyphagous insect with a broad range of hosts. It primarily affects economically important crops such as mango, citrus, banana, guava, and various woody ornamental species. Its ability to thrive on diverse plant families makes it a major concern for biosecurity and trade.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females are stationary and covered in a white, powdery wax secretion that provides physical protection. They reproduce rapidly, often through parthenogenesis, allowing populations to explode in numbers within a short period if left unchecked.

Damage and pest status: Mealybugs feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissues and extracting sap, leading to wilting, yellowing, and stunted growth. A major secondary effect is the secretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, blocking sunlight from the leaves and significantly reducing the photosynthesis and marketability of fruits.

Management and control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest:

• Stringent quarantine inspections for all imported plant materials.
• Regular field scouting to detect and contain early infestations.
• Use of biological control agents, particularly specialized parasitic wasps.
• Application of systemic insecticides that can penetrate the waxy coating.
• Pruning and removing infested plant parts to reduce the source of local spread.
