Description

The rice leafhopper (Recilia dorsalis) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting rice production in Asian countries, causing economic losses both through direct feeding and viral transmission.

The primary host for this insect is rice (Oryza sativa). However, it is capable of surviving and reproducing on various wild grass species found in and around wetlands. The insect prefers moist environments, which makes irrigated rice fields an ideal habitat for its colonization and rapid population expansion.

The biological cycle of Recilia dorsalis consists of the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The transition through these stages is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations per year in tropical and subtropical climates. Nymphs and adults often reside on the undersides of leaves or within the leaf sheaths.

The damage caused by this leafhopper is twofold. Direct feeding damage results in chlorosis, stunting, and reduced vigor of the rice plant. More importantly, it acts as a primary vector for several rice viruses, including rice dwarf virus and yellow dwarf virus, which can decimate yield if infections occur at early growth stages.
