Recilia mica leafhopper

Recilia mica is a specific species of insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This small pest plays a significant role in agricultural ecosystems, acting not only as a direct consumer of plant sap but also as a dangerous vector for phytoplasma and viral diseases that affect various agricultural crops.

The pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats, as well as various forage and wild grasses from the Poaceae family. In intensive farming systems, Recilia mica can colonize fields during the active growing season, favoring well-lit and warm areas of the field with dense vegetation cover.

The biology of the species is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis. The insects typically overwinter as eggs or late-instar nymphs in the soil or within the root zone of weeds. Upon the arrival of consistently warm temperatures, the adults begin active feeding and reproduction. Depending on environmental conditions, several generations can develop within a single season, which makes population management quite challenging.

The damage caused by the pest involves sucking cell sap from leaves and stems, leading to chlorosis, leaf curling, and overall stunted growth of the plants. However, the greatest danger lies in the phytotoxicity of their saliva and the transmission of pathogens that cause stunted growth, excessive branching, or yellowing of the crop, ultimately resulting in significant yield losses.

Effective protection strategies include both agrotechnical and chemical measures. It is crucial to manage weeds properly, as they serve as reservoirs for the pest. When the population threshold is reached, the application of systemic insecticides from the pyrethroid or neonicotinoid groups is effective, particularly during the period when leafhoppers emerge from overwintering sites or during mass nymph hatching.
