Lavender gall midge

Resseliella lavandulae

Description

Systematic position. The lavender gall midge (Resseliella lavandulae) belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized insect that has evolved to target lavender as its sole host plant, making it a critical concern for commercial lavender growers worldwide.

Affected crops. The pest exclusively damages Lavandula species, specifically Lavandula angustifolia. The economic impact is most severe in intensive cultivation systems, where the pest can compromise the health of entire rows by attacking young, tender growth.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this midge is intricately linked to the growth phases of lavender. Females deposit eggs within crevices of the plant's stem bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow beneath the epidermis, where they remain protected from environmental factors and contact pesticides, consuming the nutrient-rich inner tissues.

Character of damage and harm. Damage is caused by the larval feeding process, which creates localized necrotic lesions. These lesions cause the affected shoots to wither, turn brittle, and eventually break off. As a result, the plant loses its architectural integrity, leading to reduced floral output and significantly lower essential oil yields during the harvest period.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Resseliella lavandulae:

  • Sanitary pruning of infested stems to remove the larvae before they emerge for the next generation.
  • Strategic implementation of crop rotation and spatial isolation of new plantations from older, infested fields.
  • Targeted application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight period of adult midges to prevent egg laying.
  • Monitoring pest population levels using pheromone or yellow sticky traps to time control interventions correctly.
  • Promoting plant vigor through balanced nutrition to help lavender recover from physiological stress caused by infestations.
