Fig reticulate aphid

Reticulaphis fici is a specialized aphid species belonging to the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. This pest primarily targets various Ficus species, with the common fig (Ficus carica) being a major host. The aphid is known for creating unique, net-like structures on the underside of leaves, which serve as a protective micro-environment against environmental factors and natural predators.

The life cycle of Reticulaphis fici is adapted to the host plant's phenology. These aphids undergo multiple generations within a single season, often exhibiting parthenogenetic reproduction during peak growth periods. The eggs or nymphs typically overwinter in protected areas on the bark or near bud scales, ensuring the survival of the population until the next growing season.

Damage caused by this insect involves intense sap-sucking, which leads to chlorosis, leaf deformation, and stunted shoot development. A secondary, but equally serious issue is the excretion of honeydew. This sugary substance provides an ideal substrate for the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight, reduces photosynthesis, and contaminates the harvested fruit.

The economic impact is significant in both home gardens and commercial fig orchards. Severe infestations can cause premature leaf drop and tree decline. Furthermore, the constant feeding stress makes the fig trees more susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stress factors, resulting in significant yield losses.

Management and control strategies include:
